Black Voices Matter. Black Stories Matter. Black Lives Matter.
Our mission at Story Pirates is to celebrate the words and ideas of kids and to show them that their stories matter. We want to live in a world where everyone’s story matters, everyone’s voice matters, and everyone’s life matters; and we can’t achieve that goal until our society fully recognizes that Black lives matter.
We mourn the victims of police brutality whose stories were unfinished: George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many more. It is horrifying to us that black children in this country grow to fear walking out their doors, going for a drive, or sitting in their homes. We stand with those protesting these atrocities; realities that have plagued the Black community in this country for a very, very long time. The time for change is now.
One of our highest values at Story Pirates is respecting kids and treating them as the full people they are. That means having real conversations with them at a young age, so we wanted to share some resources to help you talk with the kids in your life about the importance of racial equity and the actions we can take together to achieve it. If you come across additional resources that you like, please send them our way, and we’ll keep growing our list of recommendations.
We believe that one of the best ways for kids to process the complexity of their world is by telling stories. To help you start a conversation with the kids in your life, we’ve also included a very special Story Spark based on a Frederick Douglass quote that you can find below these resources.
